The Northern State University Junior Varsity Volleyball
Team showed the determination, fortitude, and skill it takes
to be tournament champions during the North Dakota State College
of Science Tournament.
The Wolves played 5 matches in a single day with every match
going to the limit. The tournament was played in a 2 out of
3 format with game 3 going to 15. Over the five matches the
final game scores were: 15-13, 14-16, 15-13, 16-14, 17-15.
According to Coach Klungseth, "To play every match to its
fullest extent and come out 4-1 is an incredible example of
what this team is made of and the potential that this team
posses."
The Wolves started out the day against Williston College
with a 9:15 a.m. match. This match set a tone for the entire
day. When serve receive went well the Wolves found they could
be very dominate, when serve receive did not go well things
were pretty equal. The first ended with a Wolves win 30-26,
22-30, 15-13.
In the second match the Wolves took on a talented Lake Region
College team. Game 1 was a struggle with the Wolves falling
18-30. A strong game 2 provided momentum with a 30-28 win,
but the Wolves fell short 14-16 in game 3 for their lone loss
of the day.
Following the LRC match, Northern was able to revenge an
early season loss to the University of Mary 25-30, 30-20,
15-13.
The semifinals of the tournament created a matchup with host
North Dakota State College of Science. The Wolves made a dramatic
comeback in the third game from being down 11-3 to win 16-14.
The other two games in the match were 24-30, 30-25.
The championship match provided a rematch with Lake Region
College. A highly motivated Wolves team dominated the first
game 30-20 but lost focus in the second 23-30. In the third
game the Wolves jumped out to an early lead and then had to
battle to maintain it coming out with the championship 17-15.
For the tournament the Wolves found a great deal of consistency
from their three middle hitters. Chelsey Deibert led the offensive
attack with 41 kills and only 18 hitting errors. Kristina
Sabby had 26 kills with 13 errors. Laura Nelson had 10 kills
with only 3 errors to round out the middles. The championship
match was a breakout match for the Wolves freshman outside
hitters. Alison Dehmer led the Wolves with 15 kills with 5
hitting errors and Angela Thielen contributed 10 kills with
2 errors. Dehmer and Thielen contributed strong defensive
performances on the day with 45 and 28 digs respectively.
Consistency for the day came from the right-side position.
Tara Engquist contributed 31 kills and only 10 hitting errors
while setter Lindsey Ono led the Wolves with 119 set assists.
Ono also contributed 13 kills. Defensive specialists Jill
Ford and Angie Olson had a solid tournament contributing 30
and 23 digs respectively and also provided solid serve receive
passing. According to Coach Klungseth, "The entire tournament
was
a real team effort. Throughout the day a certain individual
might have been struggling but other players were there to
pick them up."
