WOLVES
ADD THREE ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY
April
10, 2002
Northern
State University's volleyball program has upped its list of
recruits to five. That announcement was made on National Signing
Day today by head volleyball coach Lisa Schriver.
Schriver
said three players joined early
signees Angela Thielen (Detroit Lakes HS, Minn.) and Kristina
Sabby (Sauk Rapids-Rice HS, Minn.) and signed National
Letters of Intent to attend school and play volleyball at
Northern State University.
The players
are: Chelsey Deibert, a 5-foot-8 middle hitter from Aberdeen
Central High School; Laura Nelson, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter
from Lyle High School (Minn.) and Jessica Bates, a 6-foot-1
junior college transfer from Byron, Wyo. Bates was a middle
hitter at Northwest Junior College (Powell, Wyo.) for the
past two years. Each of the new recruits verbally committed
to Northern earlier this year, according to the Aberdeen American
News.
Deibert
is an all-state performer who helped Aberdeen Central to the
best record in the history of South Dakota high school volleyball
at 43-4 and earned all-state tournament team honors for helping
the Golden Eagles finish second at state this season. Nelson
is an all-state performer and three-time all-conference selection.
Bates is the Wyoming Junior College Player of the year and
a second-team JC all-American.
"We have
an athletic freshman recruiting class," Schriver said. "These
players have the ability to play multiple positions and be
effective. It will be exciting to see this mixture of freshmen
with the strong returning senior class we have coming back.
The strength of our team will depend on how quickly we can
narrow the gap between the experienced returning players and
the new freshmen."
Schriver
is also excited about the signing of Bates, who played a year
with current NSU force Kim Heny at Northwest.
"Jessica
has played in two national tournaments and has won several
awards at the state, regional and national level for her volleyball
talents. You can't teach that kind of experience."
Although
Schriver is still on the recruiting trail, she is excited
about this year's class.
"All
five players are a great fit for our program's needs and will
be assets to this campus and the community," Schriver said.
Northern
State University competes under the NCAA Division II affiliation.
The Wolves had a breakout season in 2001, earning the program's
first-ever North Central Region ranking and climbing to as
high as seventh in the poll. The top six teams move on to
NCAA II post-season play.
