Aberdeen, S.D.- Northern State Wolves and the St. Cloud State Huskies battled for the second time in five days, this time with the Huskies pulling away with the win. The Huskies won the first two games (30-24, 30-26) before the Wolves bit back and took games three and four (30-25, 30-28). The Huskies got up early and stayed there in game five to take the match (15-6).
The season series is tied between the two teams, with the rubber match taking place in St. Cloud in mid-October. Both matches have gone five games.
After dropping games one and two the Wolves jumped out of the box quickly, starting both games three and four with 4-0 runs. Game five had the Huskies jump out early scoring the first seven of eight points to take the match.
Senior Tara Engquist led the Wolves in kills with 16 on the night (16K-6E-43TA). “Triple A” - Angie Aadahl had a game high 21 digs to go with 14 kills (14K-4E-52TA). Chelsey Deibert (11K-5E-30TA) and Laura Nelson (11K-7E-36TA) were the other Wolves in double-digit kills. “The Ocho” Kellie Heier missed out on her second triple-double of the year against St. Cloud by three kills as she finished with 45 set assists, 12 digs and seven kills (7K-5E-22TA).
On a high note, Wolves libero Katie Hegge set the NSU record for service receptions in a match with 64. Hegge broke the legendary Monica Inge's record of 56 set against Bemidji State in 2003. Coach Inge was in attendance to see her record fall.
“We're going to take away some positive things from this match tonight. You never like to lose your home opener, but the way the ladies fought back from a 0-2 deficit says a lot about who they are. Hopefully, a tough match like this will help us down the road,” commented Head Coach Lisa Schriver.
