More Stiff Competition

To finish off the North Central Regional Tournament, Northern fell 30-23, 30-28, and 30-17 to #16 ranked Augustana.  With arguably the toughest schedule of the tourney Northern had a rough time against Augie.     Once again mistakes hurt the Wolves.  Neither team hit the ball particularly well, but the Wolves gave up 11 points to serve errors.  They missed the presence of two of their players who are out due to injury (Laura Nelson and Tara Adamson).  However, one bright spot for the Wolves was Heather Pudwill ( 5’10, So).  In her first career start Heather provided the Wolves with a spark with her presence around the net, allowing the Wolves to stay close.

Wolves Drop Two Against a Pair of the Nations Best

In Northern State’s first match up of the North Central Regional Challenge, they fell to Nebraska Omaha in straight sets (30-25, 32-30, 30-11). Omaha, although unranked has received votes for the top 25 and their only losses have come to top teams in the nations.

It was a hard fought match for the Wolves. They played with high intensity but had many costly errors. Nebraska’s 54 kills made it hard for the Wolves to gain any momentum and to control the net. Northern also struggled with their hitting as they hit a dismal .051. Despite the loss, Northern outdid Omaha in blocks (14-10).

Angie Aadahl and Chelsey Deibert led with Wolves with 7 kills each, while Kellie Heier led the Wolves in assists with 23. For Omaha, Amy McLeay dominated the net with 21 kills, and Christie Johnson led the way in assists with 44.

The Wolves hope to make a better showing tonight against the #7 Nationally Ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (6-1).

#7 Duluth Sweeps Wolves

On the main court of the North Central Regional Crossover, Northern dropped three straight to #7 Minnesota-Duluth (30-18, 30-15, 30-19) to finish off their slate of games on the first day of the tourney.

Just like the first game, mistakes were costly for the Wolves. Another bad hitting night resulted in a .087 percentage. #7 Minnesota Duluth had another good hitting game (.339). Callie Zwettler led Duluth with 16 kills, while Greta Iisakka led the team with assists at 40. Chelsey Deibert led the Wolves with 10 assists, while Kellie Heier paced the team with 24 assists.

The Wolves road doesn’t get any easier as they take on #16 Augustana College. Augie is coming off a 0-3 pounding from #3 Concordia St. Paul on Friday afternoon.
