Aberdeen, S.D. - In their opening Northern Sun match, the Wolves encountered yet another injury as setter Kellie Heier rolled an ankle early in game one versus Wayne State. The Wolves, who were in the mists of a 7-2 run before Heier was injured, fell to the Wildcats in three 30-23, 30-22, 30-15.
The Wolves, who lost two middle blockers last weekend to injury, struggled in Heier’s absence. Over the match the Wolves mustered only 34 kills and hit .142 (34K 17E 120TA) on the night. Chelsey Deibert had nearly a third of all the Wolves kills as she finished with ten on the night (10K-3E-28TA). Alecia Stark filled in for Heier at the setter position and dished out 22 kill assists and had a match high 19 digs, but looked rusty as the setter as she was charged with three ball handling errors.
The Wolves struggled on the defensive side of the net as well. Their first of only two blocks in the match came at 17-11 of game three.
The Wildcats hit .309 (55K-13E-136TA) on the night, but also looked sloppy at times during the match. Wayne’s Jacey Kuck Schwarz led all players with 15 kills in the match (15K-4E-40TA).
