ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wolves knew that Saturday's match would require one of their finest performances of the season in order to upset #3 Concordia-St. Paul. While the team put up a great fight, nearly taking game one from the Bears, in the end, NSU came up short and lost the match in three straight games.
NSU came out strong in an area in which they have recently struggled, that being game one of a match. The team hit .245 in the opening game and fell just short of claiming the decision, falling 29-31. The Wolves' hitting percentage fell off drastically while CSP kept plugging away at the attacking line, resulting in a three-game loss for NSU.
The Wolves were led by Odemaris Diaz with 15 kills and four blocks. Melanie Perez posted a match high 21 digs, while Jill Rasmussen pitched in with five blocks. The Wolves' hitting average slipped to .118 by the end of the match, although their blocking hung in, totalling nine team blocks on the match.
The Bears excelled where they normally do, showing off their firepower as attackers. CSP had four players finish with at least 10 kills, led by Jessica Lucia with 19. Lucia also had seven blocks on the afternoon, as did Kelsey Kyro. CSP completed the match with a .245 hitting percentage and had 10 team blocks.
The loss ends what had been a four-game winning streak for NSU and drops the team record to 11-8 overall with a mark of 5-4 in the NSIC. The Bears improve to 18-2 overall and remain flawless in the league with a mark of 9-0. The Wolves return to action next weekend at the Crossover Tournament, hosted by MSU Moorhead. They will face Wayne State, Winona State, and Southwest MN State next Friday and Saturday.
Northern State University (located in Aberdeen, SD) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
