Northern State Women’s Volleyball Signs Four for 2006 Season
Northern State head volleyball coach Lisa Schriver has announced the signing of four student-athletes to compete for the Wolves this coming fall. Schriver has brought in two high school seniors along with a pair of junior college transfers. Elizabeth Moormann ( Dickinson, N.D.) and Kayla Ysteboe ( Grand Forks, N.D.) will join the Wolves after outstanding high school careers in the state of North Dakota, while Melanie and Stephanie Perez will transfer to NSU following marvelous freshman years at Western Nebraska Community College.
Elizabeth (Betsy) Moormann is a 6-1, middle and right hitter from Dickinson High School in Dickinson, N.D. In 2005 Moormann was named to the All-State and All-Tournament teams after her team won the State Championship. She was also named to the Western Dakota Athletic All-Conference Team. In the last two years, Moormann as amassed 454 kills and 164 blocks. She also competed in track and basketball at DHS. Moormann plans to major in forensic science at NSU. She is the daughter of Phil and Pam Moormann.
“Betsy is going to bring in size to help us offensively at the net. She has good body control for a 6’1 player and after one year with Coach Budig in the weight room we will see definite growth in her play. She comes from a very successful high school program, which was the Class A Champion last season in North Dakota. Betsy will also fit in very well with our emphasis on academics,” said Schriver.
Kayla Ysteboe is a 5-10, outside hitter from Red River High School in Grand Forks, N.D. Ysteboe was named to the All-State and All-Tournament team in 2005, as well as being named to the Eastern Dakota All-Conference Team. She was her team’s most valuable player, and also participated in track and basketball at Red River. She ranks first in her class academically and plans to major in chemistry at NSU. She is the daughter of John and Shannon Ysteboe.
“Kayla comes from one of the stronger volleyball programs in North Dakota. She is going to bring added depth to the outside hitter position. We feel that she will be able to enhance our ball control and overall play as she is a gifted player. She is also a candidate for the NSU Presidential Scholarship, which is our top academic award for incoming freshman,” said Schriver.
Sisters Melanie (left) and Stephanie Perez have also signed with the Wolves after playing one year at Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) in Scottsbluff , Neb. Melanie (5-8, outside hitter) and Stephanie (5-9, outside/setter) are natives of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico and attended La Merced High School. Last season at WNCC, the Cougars went 53-3 after becoming NJCAA Regional IX Champions and finishing fourth in the national tournament. Stephanie was named to the 2005 NJCAA Division I Volleyball All-Tournament team. Melanie and Stephanie plan to major in biology at NSU. They are the daughters of Lourdes andHector Perez.
“Melanie and Stephanie are both going to bring in over fifty matches of junior college experience to fall camp next year. They both were very successful at junior college level and plan to move on following their freshman year for academic reasons. Both had over 260 kills and 75 blocks a piece last season on a team that finished fourth in the nation,” said Schriver.
Northern State finished the 2005 season with a 15-16 overall record and 6-8 mark in the NSIC, good enough for fifth place.
