Wolves Split In Day 2 at SMSU
MARSHALL, Minn. - The Wolves picked up both a win and a loss in action Saturday, September 9 at the Southwest Minnesota State Invite. They finished 1-2 on the weekend after falling to SMSU on Friday, bringing their record to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC.
The Wolves defeated Winona State (6-6, 0-3 NSIC) in three straight games in their first match on Saturday, 30-20, 30-28, 31-29. Their blocking once again came through, as the team shut down WSU hitters 18 times in the match. Odemaris Diaz topped all players with 19 kills and a .286 hitting average. SHe also picked up nine block assists and eight digs. Kellie Heier led the team with 20 digs and 35 set assists.
Northern faced a tougher opponent in Wayne State College (10-2, 3-0 NSIC) Saturday evening. They dropped the match in four games, 25-30, 20-30, 30-27, 23-30. Diaz once again posted 19 kills on the match and also collected 11 digs. Kelsey Aden was the only other NSU player to tally double digit kills, finishing the match with 10. Melanie Perez bested all players with 27 digs.
While the Wolves led most of the statistical columns, the difference in the match came down to hitting percentage. NSU hit .193 on the match, while WSC hit .237. The Wildcats had four players post 10+ kills. NSU had 87 digs to WSC's 77 and had one more team block than WSC.
Northern State volleyball will continue on the NSIC schedule with a trip to Bismarck, ND to take on league newcomer Mary on Tuesday. They will then make their way to Moorhead, Minn. for a game against MSU Moorhead on Friday.
Diaz led the team on the weekend
with 51 kills.
