ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State upended Winona State (19-11, 10-6) three games to one in the final home NSIC volleyball match of the season, finishing with scores of 30-25, 30-23, 17-30 and 30-15. The Wolves climb over the .500 mark with a 13-12 record and are an even 8-8 in league play.
The Wolves went up two games to none, playing aggressively on offense and keeping balls alive on defense. In the first two games, NSU hit .261 and committed just nine hitting errors, while the Warriors hit just above the .100 mark and had 16 errors.
Winona State carried the momentum through the third game and took a 30-17 win. The Wolves responded immediately in the fourth game, taking a 7-3 lead with a stretch of serving from Stephanie Nygaard. Another run came later in the game as Nygaard reached the line again. This time the Wolves went on a 6-0 run and set the score at 22-10 before WSU managed a sideout. The Wolves posted 16 kills in the final game and aced Warrior passers four times. They dominated WSU 30-15 in the final decision.
Kelsey Aden provided the Wolves with firepower at the net, notching 20 kills and five blocks (2 solo, 3 assisted). Stephanie Perez had 15 kills and 21 digs, followed by Jill Rasmussen with 12 kills and four block assists. The Wolves had 64 kills on the night and hit at a rate of .211. Three NSU players went over the 20-count mark in digs against Winona State. Nygaard had 27 and Megan Gilbraith and Perez each had 21. NSU notched 109 digs and nine blocks.
The Warriors managed 55 kills against the Wolves but hit just .134 in the match. They were led by Rudi Balich with 12 kills and 23 digs. WSU had 112 total digs and nine blocks.
The Wolves will play their final home match on October 30, a non-conference meeting with Augustana College. The first serve will take place at 7:00 pm.
