The Wolves went ice cold in Rice Auditorium Wednesday night in a 66-54 loss at Wayne State (Neb.).
NSU was consistently shabby from the field throughout the game, shooting 33 percent from the 3-point line and 33 percent from the field in both the first and second halves. But the Wolves actually led the entire first half and went into the locker room with a 23-18 advantage. That was due to WSC clanking out only 21 percent from the field in the first stanza. But with no improvement in their own shooting, the Wolves couldn't hold the home team from taking over in the second half. Wayne State (12-7) finished the game shooting 43 percent. Four players scored in double digits for the Wildcats, led by Ami Pendry's 16.
Sophomore forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy, S.D.) led the way for NSU with 12 points, eight rebounds (five offensive) and four assists. Junior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche, S.D.) chipped in 11 points. Freshman guard Holly Schaunaman (Leola, S.D.) provided spark off the bench and saved NSU's team shooting percentage from dipping into the dismal .20's by going 4-of-5 from the field for nine points.
The loss was the 10th of the year for NSU (7-10). That equals the most losses ever in coach Curt Fredrickson's 20-year tenure. The 1986-87 edition of the Wolves went 19-10 under Fredrickson.
