Led by record-breaking junior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche, S.D.), Northern State posted a 72-62 win at Bemidji State Saturday night.
It's been a big week for Coyle. The defending NSIC scoring champion broke three career milestones in her two games this week. On Bemidji State's first possession, Coyle made a steal and scored on the subsequent break. The steal tied her for third on NSU's all-time list with current NSU assistant coach Paula Krueger (Stolsmark), who tallied 185 steals from 1990-1994. The basket moved Coyle past the 1,200 career point barrier. Later in the game, Coyle would move into sole possession of third place on the steals list and would also crack NSU's top 15 all-time scorers (passing Deb Esche's mark of 1,203 points from 1980-84). After scoring a game-high 22, Coyle sits at 1,221 career points. But it doesn't end there. Coyle also tied NSU's single-game steals record of eight Wednesday against Moorhead State.
BSU held a 34-31 lead at halftime but fell victim to an 18-5 NSU barrage to open the second half that gave the Wolves a double-digit cushion they held onto for most of the remainder of the game.
Coyle would end up with a game-high 22 points, two blocks and four rebounds. But the Wolves' win was earned by a balanced effort all-around and a tenacious defense that forced 26 BSU turnovers and came up with 15 steals. Junior 5-4 point guard Amanda Mikuska (Platte, S.D.) led the team in rebounding with seven boards to go along with a game-high six steals, two assists and eight points. Sophomore forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy, S.D.) chipped in 12 points to go along with four boards and a game-high five assists. Senior post Crystal Bonnichsen (Highmore, S.D. rounded out the Wolves' double digit scorers with 10 points to go with five rebounds. Erin Walker led BSU (9-13 overall, 2-6 NSIC) with 16 points.
NSU (11-11, 6-2) stayed right behind Minnesota-Duluth in the conference
race, but didn't gain any ground as the Bulldogs (7-1 NSIC) pummeled Southwest
State 87-57. NSU and UMD will duke it out next Saturday in the Barnett
Center.
