In a game used as a springboard into next season, Northern appeased 4,000 fans in the Barnett Center and avenged an earlier loss to Winona State by handling the Warriors 82-70 in the season finale for both teams.
The Wolves trailed by one at halftime, but used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to take control of the game. Junior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche, S.D.) led the way with 22 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals. Sophomore forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy, S.D.) was equally large, ending with a double-double. Johannsen scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to go with six assists. Junior guard Amanda Mikuska (Platte, S.D.) chipped in 15 points, followed by junior forward Nikki Jensen, who was 7-of-8 from the field to finish with 14 points.
The game marked the last time NSU senior Crystal Bonnichsen (Highmore, S.D.) would don a Wolves' uniform. The four-year player and two-year starter ended with seven points, four rebounds and four steals. Bonnichsen, a biology/pre-med major, has earned GTE Academic All-America District VII third team honors and will graduate summa cum laude this May.
NSU finished second in the conference with a 9-3 mark and ended the
season 15-12 overall.
