NORTHERN BEGINS 2000 WITH WIN OVER MOORHEAD STATE

January 2, 2000

A double-double from senior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche) helped lift Northern State over Moorhead State 60-51 Sunday night in Wachs Arena. The win was Northern's 13th straight. The Wolves are ranked 21st in the nation and first in the North Central Region.

Coyle led all scorers and rebounders with 26 points and 11 boards. Also coming up big on the glass for NSU was junior forward Natalie Braun (Warner), who ended with 11 rebounds, including five offensive. Kristin Engeldorf and Wendy Davis led Moorhead State (2-9 overall, 1-2 NSIC) with 11 points apiece.

With a 33-22 halftime advantage, it looked as if the Wolves, who are ranked first in the North Central Region, would roll despite what turned out to be a poor shooting night. But the Dragons hung in and made a game of it, coming back to grab a 45-43 lead with 10 minutes, 22 seconds remaining. NSU would come back to tie the score and eventually earn the lead back again for good, but were unable to put the Dragons away until sophomore forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy) and freshman guard Holly Schaunaman (Leola) combined to hit six straight free throws in the final minute to ice the game.

NSU (13-1, 3-0) entertains Minnesota-Crookston Monday night.
