Northern State set two school records for long-distance accuracy in its 99-67 dispatching of Winona State in Winona, Minn., Friday night.
Senior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche) set a school record for 3-point accuracy, hitting an unheard of 7-of-8 from dowtown (88 percent). The former record was set by NSU career 3-point leader Barb Schmidt, who once went 5-of-6 from 3-point range against Northern Montana during the 1990-91 season.
NSU (24-4 overall, 13-3 NSIC) also broke a school record as a team for 3-pointers made in a game. In all, the Wolves hit 14-of-23 from downtown. The previous school record was 13 3-pointers made, set earlier this season in NSU's win at Bemidji State.
Coyle ended with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting in 26 minutes of work. Freshman post Shanna Dahl (St. Cloud, Minn.) scored 16 points. Amanda Brown led WSU (15-10, 10-7) with 17 points.
NSU was uncharacteristically out-rebounded (40-32) by Winona, but made up for it by out-shooting the Warriors on their homecourt. NSU shot a solid 52 percent from the field and scorching 61 percent from 3-point range. A 14-2 NSU run midway through the second half blew the game wide open, giving the Wolves a 24-point lead they would only build on with reserves down the stretch.
With Wayne State's upset win over Minnesota-Duluth Friday night, NSU
still has a shot for a three-way tie for the regular season conference
championship. UMD faces the other party in this scenario -- Southwest State
-- Saturday night.
