Northern State avenged a 14-point home loss to Winona State by defeating the Warriors 83-78 in Winona Saturday night to end the regular season for both teams. The Wolves lost to Winona 70-84 in Aberdeen Jan. 19.
The Wolves, who ended the regular season 18-8 overall and 14-4 in the conference for second place, started slow but built a double-digit lead in the first half and went in the locker rooms with a 42-34 edge. NSU exteded its margin to as many as 21 points in the second half before the Warriors (10-16, 6-12 NSIC) made their final push. WSU whittled the lead down to just two points with under three minutes remaining, but the Wolves were able to recover down the stretch thanks to clutch plays by senior forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy), who scored five of NSU's final eight points and assisted on another score. She also grabbed two offensive rebounds during that time to help the Wolves seal the win.
Johannsen led the Wolves with 19 points to go with five rebounds (four
offensive), four assists and two steals. Senior post Jennifer Murphy (Aberdeen)
ended with 16 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Shanna Dahl
(St. Cloud, Minn.) led the team with eight rebounds to go with 15 points.
Freshman guard Carin Rambow (Litchfield, Minn.) rounded out NSU's double-digit
scorers with 12 points. Amanda Brown led WSU with a monster game, recording
22 points and 15 rebounds.
