NORTHERN SUFFERS SEASON-ENDING LOSS TO MINNESOTA-DULUTH

March 2, 2001

Northern State started out on fire, but quickly went ice-cold from the field for the final three-fourths of the game in a 45-60 semi-final loss in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament Friday in Concordia-St. Paul's Gangelhoff Center.

The Wolves finished the season at 19-9 and second in the final NSIC regular season standings at 14-4. This is the second straight year the Bulldogs have ended NSU's season. Last year, UMD defeated NSU in the first round of the North Central Region Tournament.

NSU hit nine of its first 12 shots and led early, but couldn't buy a bucket the rest of the game despite frequent open looks. For the game, the Wolves were just 18-of-58 from the field (31 percent). Senior post Jennifer Murphy (Aberdeen) led the team with 11 points, followed by freshman guard Carin Rambow (Litchfield, Minn.), who tallied 10 points. Junior guard Sara Hemquist (Baxter, Minn.) led the team with six rebounds. Kim Toewe led Duluth with 20 points and nine rebounds.

For NSU, the game marked the last for four-year seniors Murphy, Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy) and Natalie Braun (Warner). Johannsen ended her career with 400 assists, which is second on NSU's all-time chart.
