Northern State stayed undefeated in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and picked up its seventh straight win with a 72-69 victory over a dangerous host in Minnesota State-Moorhead Friday night.
The Wolves (7-4 overall, 3-1 NSIC) led for virtually the entire game but were never able to shake the pesky Dragons (4-7, 1-2). MSU-M is much better than its 4-7 mark indicates, with the Dragons giving some of the perennial best teams in the nation like North Dakota and North Dakota State all they wanted during the pre-conference season.
NSU led by as many as nine points in the second half, but the game ended
up coming down to the final minute. Freshman guard Carin Rambow (Litchfield,
Minn.) helped ice the game by hitting 3-of-4 free throws in the final 30
seconds of the contest. NSU was led by senior post Jennifer Murphy, who
scored 17 points. Murphy also led the team in rebounds, joining fellow
senior forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy) with six boards apiece. Johannsen
also recorded a career-high nine assists on the night. Rambow and junior
point guard Holly Schaunaman (Leola) added 10 points apiece to round out
NSU's double-digit scorers. MSU-M was led by Katie Doerr's 20 points.
