NSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM SIGNS SIX PREP STANDOUTS
April 11, 2001
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Six high school standouts have signed National Letters of
Intent to attend and play women's basketball at Northern State University. That
announcement was made on National Signing Day today by head coach Curt Fredrickson.
The list includes three players from North Dakota, two from South Dakota and
one from Wyoming. All six players will compete in their respective state's all-star
games this summer. The players are:
Recruit
Ht. Pos. High School
Angie Frenzel
6-1 F/C Mandan (N.D.)
Michelle Hanson 6-0
F/C Fargo North (N.D.)
Andrea Ronderos 5-9
Forward Washburn (N.D.)
Amber Powell
5-7 Guard Parkston
Rebecca Schreur 6-2
Center Alcester-Hudson
Brooke Fandrich 6-0
F/C Rock Springs (Wyo.)
Angie Frenzel was one of the cornerstones of Mandan High School's state championship team this season. A three-time all-conference and all state-tournament performer, Frenzel was also an all-state performer as a senior. She averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots per game while shooting 62 percent from the field and 64 percent from the free-throw line. She also hit 17 3-point shots on the season.
"Angie comes from a great program in Mandan and was vital to her team's championship drive this season," Fredrickson said. "On our team she'll join former Mandan Braves standout Amanda Dietrich, who will be a senior for us next season."
Michelle Hanson was Fargo North High School's team MVP as both a junior and senior. This season, she led North to a third place finish at state and a 21-4 record. She's a three-time all-conference performer and also an all-state tournament team member. Hanson averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line.
"Michelle has led some very good teams at Fargo North and comes from a respected program," Fredrickson said. "She'll be the second player from Fargo on our roster next season, joining 2000 Fargo South graduate Renae Whitford."
Andrea Ronderos was North Dakota's Class B Player of the Year and one of the eight finalists for the state's Miss Basketball award this season. A first-team all-state and all-state tournament team selection, she led Washburn to a 25-3 record and a state tournament appearance. Ronderos averaged 15 points, five rebounds, three steals and four assists per game while shooting 48 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line. She was even more potent from 3-point range, knocking down 53 3-pointers on the season at a 45 percent shooting clip. Ronderos finished her high school career with 1,721 career points.
"Andrea brings a lot to the table with her athletic ability and has had an outstanding career for a quality program in Washburn," Fredrickson said.
Amber Powell was a first-team all-state selection as a senior for Parkston and is a three-time all-conference performer. As a senior, she averaged 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists per game. Powell helped Parkston to a 19-5 record, which included upset wins over No. 1 ranked Wagner and No. 3 ranked Wessington Springs.
"Amber is an outstanding shooter who plays a very aggressive brand of basketball for a guard," Fredrickson said. "Parkston was fun to watch this year."
Rebecca Schreur, the tallest of the 2001 recruits at 6-foot-2, is a three-time all conference performer and earned Big Sioux Conference MVP honors as a senior. She led Alcester-Hudson to a 15-5 record as a senior. Schruer averaged a near double-double, putting up 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds per game while shooting 57 percent from the field.
"Rebecca did not start playing basketball until she was a freshman, but came on to be one of the best players in the state by the end of her senior season," Fredrickson said. "She's shown great ability to pick up the game and the basketball program at Alcester-Hudson did a good job of bringing her along."
Brooke Fandrich is an all-state and three-time all-conference performer for Rock Springs High School and led her team to a Wyoming state tournament appearance this season. Her senior all-state resume reads 14 points and nine rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the field.
"Brooke is a very good low block player who I thought was one of the top rebounders in the state of Wyoming," Fredrickson said. "She possesses a 25-inch vertical jump and is the product of a winning program in Rock Springs."
After losing their starting frontcourt to graduation this season in senior forwards Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy) and Natalie Braun (Warner), and senior center Jennifer Murphy (Aberdeen), Fredrickson said feels this recruiting class addresses the team's needs in the post.
"We feel we have four outstanding players coming in that can play the four or five position," Fredrickson said. "We addressed our guard needs in last year's recruiting class and also picked up two outstanding perimeter players this year."
Overall, Fredrickson said this year's recruiting class is loaded with potential.
"This is a very talented group," Fredrickson said. "We have three of the top 10 recruits from North Dakota, and each of them played on state tournament teams this year. Each one of these players has the ability to make an impact on our program and I'm looking forward to seeing how it will all come together next season."
