-- 2000-01 Recap --

Northern State's women's basketball team, which is the fourth-winningest program in all of NCAA II, posted a 19-9 overall record in 2000-01 and finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 14-4 mark.

Senior forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy) earned first-team all-conference honors, while fellow senior Jennifer Murphy (Aberdeen) earned league honorable mention laurels along with junior point guard Holly Schaunaman (Leola).

Johannsen ended her career as one of the most versatile players to ever suit up for the Wolves. She became only the ninth player in program history to record 1,300 points and 600 rebounds. In addition, Johannsen also ranks second on NSU's career assists list and is a top ten performer in numerous other categories. Johannsen was also named to the 2001 GTE Academic All-District VII team.

Other than Johannsen's heroics, NSU's season was highlighted by two perfect months of basketball. The Wolves went undefeated in December with six straight wins and in February with nine straight. The Wolves' season ended in March with a semifinal loss in the NSIC tournament to Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs went on to win the NSIC tournament championship and knocked off perennial national powers North Dakota State and Nebraska-Kearney in regional play before losing to North Dakota in Grand Forks for the North Central Region championship. A North Central Region team has won seven of the last nine and eight of the last 11 national championships.

Next season, the Wolves will not only have to replace Johannsen, but also the rest of their frontcourt starters in Murphy and senior Natalie Braun (Warner).

The Wolves will look to a large and talented senior class for leadership next year. Also making waves this season was upstart true freshman Carin Rambow (Litchfield, Minn.), who already ranks ninth on NSU's career 3-pointers made list.
