SCHAUNAMAN EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT ALL-NSIC HONORABLE MENTION AWARD

Feb. 28, 2002

Schaunaman

Northern senior point guard Holly Schaunaman earned her second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Honorable Mention award. That announcement was made today by the NSIC.

Besides running NSU's offense, the Leola, S.D., native is also a defensive sparkplug for a team that ranks eighth nationally in rebounding margin and 10th in field goal percentage defense. Individually, no one on the team averages over 10 points per game. Schaunaman, an all-region candidate, leads the team in assists and steals and is ranked sixth in the NSIC in those categories. She averages nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals per game for the Wolves.

FREDRICKSON BECOMES NSU'S WINNINGEST COACH, PASSING LEGENDARY BOB WACHS

Dec. 19, 2001

With Northern State's 97-60 win over Jamestown College Wednesday night, Curt Fredrickson became the winningest coach in Northern history, surpassing former men's basketball coach Bob Wachs.

Fredrickson's career mark at the milestone reads 533-126 in his 23rd year of coaching. Wachs ended his 30-year career in 1985 with a 532-286 record.

Fredrickson came into the 2001-02 season having won a greater percentage of games over a longer period of time than any NCAA II coach. In fact, there are only three coaches with a greater winning percentage over a longer period of time at any level. Names on that list are living legend Pat Summitt at Tennessee, basketball icon Adolph Rupp at Kentucky, and Division III coach Phillip Kahler at St. John Fisher's in Rochester, NY.

RAMBOW NAMED NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nov. 24, 2001

Rambow

Sophomore shooting guard Carin Rambow (Litchfield, Minn.) earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors for her efforts at the Metro State Roadrunner Classic last weekend.

In helping NSU become the only team to exit the Classic with two wins, Rambow scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds over the weekend and was named the Classic's Most Valuable Player.

Her nine boards in the opening game against Northwest Missouri State (67-63 win) were a career high, as were her 17 points the following night against host team Metro State (92-69 win). Rambow also hit a career-best five 3-pointers in the Metro game.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM SIGNS PAIR OF MINNESOTA PREP STANDOUTS

Nov. 14, 2001

ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State University women's basketball coach Curt Fredrickson announced today the signing of two Minnesota high school standouts to National Letters of Intent. They are Melissa Braaten, a 5-foot-8 guard from Stillwater, Minn., and Krista Rambow, a 5-9 point guard from Litchfield, Minn.

Braaten

Braaten was the MVP of Stillwater High School's team as a junior, averaging 13 points a game while shooting 40 percent from the field, 37 percent from 3-point range and 70 percent from the free-throw line. During the past six summers, Braaten has played for the highly successful North Tartan team. She was also on the All-Star team at the Minnesota Elite camp last summer.

Rambow

Rambow is a fourth-year varsity starter at Litchfield High School. As a junior, she was an All-Central Minnesota selection, leading her team in scoring with 12 points per game to go with five assists and four rebounds per contest. During the offseason, she was named the MVP of the Greater Mid-States Revue camp in Sioux Falls. She was also selected to the All-Star team at the Minnesota Elite camp.

"We have signed two quality young ladies to help our perimeter game in the future," Fredrickson said. "Both had outstanding junior years and summer basketball seasons. With graduation set to take four of our perimeter players this season, these two athletes will fit in nicely. They will be two of the top players in Minnesota this year and we are very excited to have both of them join our program."

THIRD ANNUAL HALLOWEEN HOUSE OF HOOPS A BIG HIT

Oct. 28, 2001

Northern's men's and women's basketball programs, in cooperation with McDonald's, hosted the third annual NSU Halloween House of Hoops Sunday night at the Barnett Center.

The women's basketball team held a 3-point shooting contest, while the men's team dressed up in their Halloween costumes and greeted the over 200 children in attendance. Both teams ended the night by forming a tremendous trick-or-treating line for the children to go through with their McDonald's candy buckets.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM BEGINS PRACTICE

Oct. 15, 2001

Textbook -- Baxter, Minn., native Sara Hemquist is one of NSU's five seniors this season.

Northern State University's women's basketball team began practice Monday night.

The Wolves will be led by a senior class of five players with extensive experience. The Wolves will have to fill the shoes of three departed starters from last season, but with the leadership of this year's senior class, a solid group of underclassmen and another great recruiting class, the team hopes to improve on its 19-9 mark from last season.

See the season prospectus for a more in-depth preview.

Northern will have its annual Maroon-Gold Scrimmage Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. After the women's game, the men's team will have an exhibition game against Team Tharaldson.

Northern's regular season opens with a tournament at Morningside College (Sioux City, Iowa). The Wolves will take on host Morningside Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. and South Dakota Nov. 17 at 6 p.m.

Sophomore Carin Rambow, right, (Litchfield, Minn.) broke into the starting lineup as a freshman last season and will help solidify the shooting guard spot again this year.

NSU's home opener is Nov. 28 against Augustana College.
