Wolves Woes Continue in Loss to Winona State

NSU's Brooke Fandrich hit for a career high 17 points in the Wolves' 70-67 loss to Winona State on Monday.

Winona, Minn..-- Northern State saw a late-game rally fall just short on Monday night as Winona State held off the Wolves 70-67 in NSIC women's basketball action.

Winona led by as many as 11 in the first half before the Wolves trimmed the Warriors' halftime advantage to eight at 39-31.

WSU sprinted to a second half lead of 12 before a 14-2 Wolves run tied the score for the first time since the first minute of the game with 13:54 remaining.

The Wolves run would end, however as Winona made a spurt of its own rolling off a 13-2 run to put them up 60-49 with 8:07 to play.

Northern fought back to tie the score again at 60-all and remained within four points when Brooke Fandrich hit a layup and a free throw to draw the Wolves within one with :58 to play.

The Warriors would miss two shots but collect offensive rebounds on each before Heather Peterson hit a jumper to seal the win with :10 to go.

The Wolves had one last chance to tie but were unable to get a shot off as the final buzzer sounded with Winona ahead 70-67.

--Brooke Fandrich was the lone Wolf in double-figures as she rolled off a career high 17 going 7-for-9 from the floor.

--Amanda Mollman paced the Wolves on the boards collecting nine on the night.

--Northern shot a season-high 42.6 percent from the floor on the night while Winona hit at a 45.8 percent clip.

--Winona State hit 7-of-12 three-pointers (.583)

--WSU's Heather Peterson led the Warriors with 17 points while Kim Dreyer pulled down 12 boards.

--Northern returns home on Friday to host Wayne State. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. in the Barnett Center.
