Grand Forks, N.D. – Northern State found themselves down 18 at the half, 44-26 to North Dakota at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D. After the Sioux came out and hit a three to start the second half, the Wolves went on a 30-9 run to tie the game and went on to down the Fight Sioux 77-69 in front of 2,113 shocked fans.
The Wolves, 6-1, 0-0 NSIC, found themselves down 6-0 early, which the Sioux quickly extended to a 13-point lead, 17-4 with 15:00 left in the first half. The Wolves managed to keep the lead at 13 until five minutes left in the first, where the Sioux extended the lead to 18 at the half, 44-26. The Sioux scored 19 points off Wolves turnovers and were 6 of 12 from three-point range in the first half.
The second half had the Sioux hit a three pointer to start, putting them up 21. The Wolves then embarked on a 30-9 run capped off by an Ali Chmielewski hitting her only three-point attempt of the night to tie the game at 56 with 9:15 to go. The Wolves continued to pour it on as they extended the run to 37-9 to lead by seven, 63-56, with 5:35 to go.
The Wolves were able to hit their free throws down the stretch (they were 21 of 25 on the night from the charity stripe) as they capped off the amazing comeback.
“In my twenty plus years of coaching, this is the biggest comeback that I can remember,” comment Wolves Head Coach Curt Fredrickson on the win.
A pair of North Dakotans led the way in the second half to down their native state’s team. Carolin Becker (So., F, Beulah, N.D.) scored a career high 23 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field, 9 of 11 from the free throw line and grabbed nine rebounds as she dominated in the second half. Miranda Beopple (So., F, Dickinson, N.D.) had 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting. She also grabbed nine boards on the night. Ali Chmielewski (Jr., F, Foley, Minn.) also dropped in 15 points in 27 minutes. Liza Sizer (Sr., G, Miller, S.D.) was the other Wolf in double figures with her 14 points.
