MARSHALL, Minn. – Northern State let a close game slip away late in the first half and trailed by as many as 23 before making a late run in a 73-64 loss to Southwest Minnesota State (19-8, 9-4). The Wolves fall into fourth place in the NSIC with an 8-5 record and a game out of second place. The Wolves did secure a home first round NSIC Tournament game as Minnesota, Crookston fell to Concordia St. Paul. Wolves hold the tiebreaker over UMC, having defeat regular season champions, MSU Moorhead, while the Golden Eagles were swept.
The Wolves trailed by five late in the first half with a chance to score last, but made one of their 12 first half turnovers, which SMSU’s Michelle Bruns turned into three points to give the Mustangs a 39-31 halftime lead.
The Mustangs continued to pour it on as they opened the second half on an 11-2 run. The Wolves turned the ball over their first four possessions of the game, and then the first two possession of the second half as they committed 23 turnovers in the game; the third most this season.
The Wolves found themselves down as many as 23 in the second half before the Wolves' bench was able to chip into the lead. Sara Jensen (Jr., G, South Shore, S.D.) was a perfect 4-4 from the field and had eight late points to finish the game with ten. Michelle Hanson (Sr., F/C, Fargo, N.D.) and Miranda Boepple (So., F, Dickinson, N.D.) led the Wolves with 11 points, while Noelle Hall (Fr., C, Altura, Minn.) led the team in rebounds with eight. Hall had eight points in the game, but was shutout in the second half as she was 0-4 from the field.
