ABERDEEN, S.D. – #4 Northern State improved to 7-0 all-time versus #5 Minnesota, Crookston at home as they handed the Golden Eagles an 85-76 setback in the first round of the NSIC Red Baron Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Wolves advance to the semi-final of the tournament on Saturday, March 5 th to take on the #1 MSU Moorhead at 4:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
The Wolves found themselves down 15 midway through the first half before calling a timeout at the 8:12 mark. Over the next four minutes the Wolves went on a 12-2 run to pull within five. The Wolves would come as close as two with just under a minute to go, but a late three pointer by UMC’s Jesse Holicky (So., G, Dalton, Minn.) put the Golden Eagles up five at the half, 37-32. Holicky finished the game 4 of 6 from three-point range, scoring 15 points.
The Wolves battled back to take the lead with 11:41 left in the game and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles were as close as four points with just over two minutes to go, but the Wolves hit their free throws down the stretch to get the win and take the season series 2-1 over the Golden Eagles.
Leading scorer for the Wolves was Miranda Boepple (So., F, Dickinson, N.D.) with 21 points, nine assists and five rebounds. Noelle Hall (Fr., C, Altura, Minn.) added 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while CarolinBecker (So., F, Beulah, N.D.) added 14 points, nine rebounds and two assists. AliChmielewski (Jr., F, Foley, Minn.) rounded out the Wolves in double figures with 12 points and four assists.
The Golden Eagles had four players in double figures. Casey Francis (Jr., F, Fosston, Minn) scored a team high 19 points on 6 of 12 shooting. Katie Carlson (Sr., C, Mora, Minn.) added 16, Holicky had 15, while Carly Score (So., F, Boyceville, Wis.) had 12. The Golden Eagles top three scorers (KarnaPlaine, Steph Mayclin, and KariScore), who all average in double figures, were held to a combined total of 14 points on the night.
The number four-seeded Wolves (17-11, 8-6 NSIC) advance to the NSIC Red Baron Tournament Semi-Finals to take on the top seeded Dragons of MSU Moorhead (23-5, 12-2 NSIC) on Saturday, March 5 th at 4:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
