LAKEWOOD, Colo. - A second half surge by the Northern State women’s basketball team resulted in a 64-46 win over the Colorado School of Mines Saturday afternoon at the Colorado Christian Tournament. The Wolves improve to 3-0 on the season, while CSM falls to 0-2.
The Wolves faced similar game-opening woes in Saturday’s matinee game as they did the night before, turning the ball over too many times and not connecting on enough shots. In the first ten minutes of the half, the Wolves gave up 11 turnovers and were shooting in the low 30’s. The Orediggers could not connect on shots either, however, as the lead flipped back and forth. Northern shook off their rough start and took the lead for good at the 13:37 mark with a Noelle Hall jumper.
The game went into a three-point shootout midway through the half, starting with a three from CSM’s Sara Eickelman which gave the Orediggers a three point lead. NSU answered with back-to-back threes by Jessica Deinert and Carolin Becker, taking a three point lead of their own, 18-15 at the 7:08 mark. The team worked hard to gain rebounds and took advantage of a spell of Oredigger turnovers, going up 24-17 following a set of free throws from Allison Johnson with 5:16 left to play.
The Wolves gave up several more turnovers and sent the Orediggers to the charity stripe multiple times in the final minutes of the half. CSM was not able to convert on every opportunity they were given, but they got back to within three points by the time the buzzer sounded. The Wolves led 31-28 at the half.
A halftime pep talk apparently got Northern firing on all cylinders. The team opened the second half with an 18-5 run, receiving points from five different players. The Wolves were shooting nearly 50% from the field in the opening minutes, quickly taking a double-digit lead. A set of free throws from Noelle Hall put the Wolves up 40-33 at the 9:46 mark.
The Wolves’ shooting cooled off a bit as the Orediggers got back to within 10 points, 50-40 with six minutes left to play. Aggressive offensive plays drew CSM fouls and the Wolves opened a sizeable lead back up through free throws and outside shots. An Amanda Glenz free throw put the Wolves up 50-35 at the 7:30 mark. Miranda Boepple sunk a shot from beyond the arc to give NSU a 15 point lead with five minutes left. The Wolves went on to dominate the remainder of the game, finishing with an 18 point win, 64-46.
Boepple recorded the team’s first double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and pulling down ten boards. Becker had ten points and nine rebounds, followed by Hall with ten points and eight rebounds. The Wolves shot 37.7% from the field and out-rebounded the Orediggers 50-26. Their one downfall came in turnovers; NSU committed 20 on the night.
The Orediggers were led by senior Iva Tomova who ended the day with 10 points, while teammate Sara Eickelman chipped in seven.
The women will continue their road journey on Tuesday evening, traveling to Grand Forks, ND for a 6:00 pm meeting with North Dakota. The game will be aired on the Fighting Sioux Network, carried by Midcontinent Communications.
