Northern Suffers First Loss, Hall & Boepple Receive Honors

November 25, 2006
NAMPA, Idaho – For the first time in the 2006-07 season, the Northern State women’s basketball team found themselves behind at the final buzzer, dropping Saturday night’s matchup with Northwest Nazarene 53-59. The Wolves’ only lead of the night came at the 18:46 mark of the first half, when they were up 4-2.

Northern scored two quick buckets early in the game, but were then held to just three points in more than ten game minutes. The Crusaders used that time to put up 27 points, taking a 20 point lead with eight minutes left to play in the first half. The Wolves got their game back on track and started to chip away at the deficit. They went on a 16-4 run to narrow the score to 31-23, receiving seven points from Noelle Hall.

The Wolves finished the half with an impressive shooting performance, dropping in 11-of-23 baskets for a 47.8% average. The team gave up 20 turnovers, however, leading to 16 Crusader points. NNU, on the other hand, turned the ball over just ten times while shooting 44.4% (16-36) from the field. Northwest Nazarene led 38-29 at the half.

Northern’s performance in the second half was the exact opposite of that seen in the first. The Wolves committed just eight turnovers, but shot a meager 19.2% from the field. Things appeared promising as the half started, with Northern taking advantage of a 6-0 run to get to within three points, 38-35. In the next five minutes, the Crusaders would push their lead back to ten and never look back, handing the Wolves their first loss of the season with a final score of 59-53.

Miranda Boepple ( Dickinson, ND) went 4-of-11 from the field and hit all eight of her free throws to lead the team with 16 points on the night. Allison Johnson ( Mount Vernon, SD) added 13 points, while Noelle Hall ( Altura, MN) had 10 and recorded a team high 10 rebounds. Carolin Becker (Beulah, ND) had three blocked shots. NSU finished the night with a 32.7% shooting average and took a 36-32 rebounding edge.

The Crusaders were led in both scoring and rebounding by Danielle Dwello with 16 points and 10 boards. Janee Olds had 14 points. NNU shot 41.0% from the field and had 21 turnovers.

For their efforts at the Hampton Inn & Suites Tournament this weekend, Noelle Hall and Miranda Boepple were named to the six player All-Tournament team.

The Wolves will take their 5-1 record into the upcoming NSIC opening weekend. Their first test will be at Winona State on Friday, December 1, followed by a game at Upper Iowa on Saturday.
