NSU Falls 71-50, Becker Surpasses 1,000 Points
December 18, 2006
VERMILLION, SD – The Northern State women’s basketball team gave up their second loss of the season Monday night in Vermillion, SD. The Coyotes of South Dakota dropped in 12 three-pointers and forced 24 NSU turnovers in the 71-50 decision. With eight points on the night, NSU senior Carolin Becker cleared the 1,000 point mark of her career and became the 25th member of the 1,000 Point Club.
The Wolves shot just shy of their season field goal average, sinking 43.5% of shots taken, but the high number of turnovers resulted in fewer opportunities to score. The Coyotes came out of the gates red hot, shooting 55.2% on their way to a 44-25 halftime lead. They continued to keep Northern at bay for the remainder of the game, finishing the game with 34 points from NSU turnovers. The Wolves out-rebounded their opponent for the fifth straight game, this time by a 32-28 margin.
Allison Johnson led the Wolves with nine points on the night, followed by Noelle Hall and Carolin Becker with eight points each. Becker’s second field goal of the game came early in the second half and propelled her into NSU history as one of just 25 players to score 1,000 points.
The Coyotes had three players score in double figures, led by Bridget Yoerger with 16 points, Jenna Hoffman with 14 points, and Ashley Robinette with 12 points. Yoerger and Shannon Daly led all players with eight rebounds. USD finished the game with a field goal percentage of 42.6%, hitting 41.4% of shots from three-point range (12-29). It is the most three-pointers any opponent has scored against Northern State this season.
The loss sets Northern State’s overall record at 10-2, while South Dakota continues on a five-game winning streak with a 9-1 record. The Wolves will break for the holidays, returning to Wachs Arena on December 29 for a non-conference battle with another NCC team, Minnesota Duluth at 6:00 pm.
