Wolves Scorched
January 5, 2007
MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Wolves shot a season low 23.7% from the field in their first Northern Sun Conference game in three weeks. MSU Moorhead (9-4, 3-1 NSIC) overtook Northern (11-3, 4-1 NSIC) by a score of 56-40 and gained their first home win of the season.
It was a rough-and-tumble first half in which aggressive players hit the floor often and even played with a single shoe. The Wolves led just one time in the half, when Melissa Braaten sunk a three-pointer to set the score at 16-15 at the 7:40 mark. With the Wolves shooting just 28.1% in the half, however, the lead would not last. MSUM worked their way to a 40.7% field goal percentage in the half, leading by as many as 13 points while the Wolves went scoreless for four late minutes. Celia Westphal ended a 10-3 MSUM run with five points to end the half, the Dragons leading 34-24.
The Wolves continued to shoot poorly in the second half and trailed by at least ten points for the remainder of the game. The Dragons also shot in low figures, however, minimizing the Northern loss. The Wolves finished the game with a 23.7% field goal percentage, their worst showing of the season. They took an uncharacteristic 23 shots from three-point range, connecting on just three for a .130 long range percentage. The Dragons shot 36.5 percent from the field and had 22 points in the paint. They narrowly out-rebounded the Wolves 38-37 on their way to the 56-40 win.
Northern did not have any players finish with double figures in scoring or rebounding. Braaten and Westphal topped the Wolves with seven points each, while Noelle Hall and Miranda Boepple had nine rebounds each. NSU’s top three season scorers, Hall, Boepple, and Becker, who each average more than ten points per game, combined for a total 11 points.
Jessica Fesenmaier was the leading scorer of the night, putting in 15 points from 6-of-8 shooting. Allison Swenson and Lindsey Anderson each added 10 points.
The Wolves will travel to Concordia-St. Paul for a 6:00 pm game tomorrow night at Gangelhoff Center.
