Northern Leads NSIC With Sunday Win

January 27, 2007
ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Northern State women (16-4, 9-2 NSIC) secured sole possession of first place in the NSIC with a 62-43 pummeling of Upper Iowa (7-13, 3-8 NSIC) Sunday afternoon at Wachs Arena. The Wolves are on a current five-game winning streak and have never lost to the Peacocks in the five games of the series.

The Peacocks applied a tough zone defense and saw plenty of offensive success in the early minutes of the game. Northern trailed by as many nine points in the first half, 23-14, before making an 11-2 run to tie the game up at the 2:45 mark. They quickly turned the tide of the game, forcing Peacock turnovers, hitting the boards with intensity, and connecting on their shots from the field. The Wolves ended the half with a 19-5 run to take a 33-28 lead at the intermission.

Carolin Becker dumped in 13 points and had six rebounds in the half as the Wolves shot 44.4 percent from the field (12-27) and led in rebounding 21-13. Andrea Downs had 14 points in the half for UIU, with the Peacocks cooling to a shooting average of just 36.7 percent (11-30).

The Wolves continued to increase their lead in the second half, going up by 14 (50-36) following a Jessica Deinert three-pointer at the 8:11 mark. Turnovers became a problem for the Peacocks in the final 20 minutes. After committing just five in the first half, Upper Iowa turned the ball over 10 times in the second half, leading to 18 NSU points. The Wolves ran away with the game in the final ten minutes, pushing the margin to as many as 24 points. They allowed the Peacocks just 15 points in the entire 20 minutes. Northern kept their 2006-07 home record flawless with a 62-43 win.

Becker finished the game with 17 points after hitting 5-of-10 shots from the field and sinking all six free throw attempts. Both Becker and Hall pulled down nine rebounds, while Hall added 14 points on the day. NSU shot 39.0% from the field (23-59), led in rebounding 45-32, and dished out 15 assists.

Upper Iowa was led in scoring by Downs with 14 points and Paige DeVine with 12. Amanda Faas had eight rebounds. The Peacocks shot 28.3% from the field (15-53), had 15 turnovers, and just seven assists.

The Wolves will carry the conference lead on the road next weekend, heading to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday and Wayne State on Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 6:00 pm
