Wolves Drop Second Straight, Fall To Wildcats 63-60
February 3 , 2007
WAYNE, Neb. – The Wolves (16-6, 9-4 NSIC) attempted and failed a late-game comeback for the second straight night on the road, this time falling to Wayne State College (13-9, 6-7 NSIC) by a score of 60-63. The Wolves were down by as many as ten points in the second half and got to within a single point difference late in the game, but committed too many errors to take the win.
Northern once again showed their dominance on the boards, grabbing a 47-27 edge, but it would not be enough to make up the difference in score. The Wolves shot 38.5% from the field on the night, barely edging out WSC’s mark of 38.2%. While neither team shot particularly well in the game, Wildcats had an intense defensive effort, forcing 19 Northern turnovers while gaining 12 steals.
The Wolves, down 28-21 at the half, trailed by their largest deficit at the 15:15 mark of the second half, 35-25. Northern State put forth a much better defensive push at the midpoint of the half and held the Wildcats without a field goal for a five minute stretch. Freshman Allison Johnson got the Wolves back into the game late in the half, single-handedly putting in eight straight points, five from the charity stripe and three from long range, to get the score down to a single point difference, 48-49 with 6:11 to play. The Wildcats began to create and hit shots to take back the game, going back up by as many as nine points before the final buzzer sounded. A Miranda Boepple three-pointer at the buzzer set the final score at 63-60 in favor of Wayne State.
Noelle Hall finished the game with 16 points and a season high 16 rebounds, her second straight double-double. Miranda Boepple had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Allison Johnson pitched in with 11 points.
The Wildcats also had three players finish with double figures in scoring. Lauren Gustafson, Erin McCormick, and Teresa Case had 14, 13, and 10 points each, respectively. The leading WSC rebounder was Andrea Schoepf with seven boards.
With an active five-game losing streak on the road this season, the Wolves will be happy to return to Wachs Arena next weekend for two very important matchups with the current NSIC leaders. Concordia-St. Paul will be in Aberdeen on Friday night and MSU-Moorhead will visit the Hub City on Saturday. Both games are slated for a 6:00 pm start.
Northern State University (located in Aberdeen, SD) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
