Wolves Win Battle, Slay Dragons 65-59

February 10, 2007
ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State women's basketball team (17-7, 10-5 NSIC) snapped a three game slide with a 65-59 upset over MSU Moorhead (17-6, 11-3 NSIC) Saturday night at Wachs Arena. The Wolves took the rebounding edge against a Dragons team who had been averaging 10.2 more rebounds than their opponents this season and received a big game from junior guard Jaclyn Arns.

MSU Moorhead started out shooting hot from the field and led most of the first half. With a height advantage, the Dragons went to their players down low for easy buckets and the Wolves were called for several early fouls. Down by their largest margin of the half, 29-20 at the 6:55 mark, the Wolves snapped out of their funk and went on a 14-2 run to take a three point lead 34-31 with two minutes to play. Only one more bucket would be scored in the half, an MSUM three-pointer that tied the game up at 34-34 at the intermission.

While the big players waged war in the paint and traded buckets nearly evenly in the second half, the game ultimately came down to whose guards could produce the best, and the Wolves walked away as the victors in this match. Jaclyn Arns was one of the biggest reasons that Northern came away with the upset. The junior point guard showed an aggression off of the drive and worked around defenders to lay in points and also secured both ends of a one-and-one in the final seconds of the game. Noelle Hall found her touch and put in 14 second half points.

The game was tight and came down to the final minutes. Northern led 59-55 at the 3:31 mark after Arns and Hall combined for nine points to take back the lead. The Dragons began to turn the ball over too many times and they missed shots from their key player, Jessica Fesenmaier. Northern picked up their defense and kept Moorhead without a field goal for the final 3:31 of regulation. They held on to a single digit lead in the final minute by hitting 6-of-7 free throws.

The Wolves were led by Noelle Hall (Altura, MN) with 22 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Jaclyn Arns (St. Michael, MN) shot 5-of-10 from the field and finished the night with a career high 15 points. Leading the Wolves on the boards was Carolin Becker (Beulah, ND) with 11. The team shot 33.9 percent from the field and posted a 42-40 rebounding edge. They scored 14 points off of MSUM's 12 turnovers while turning the ball over themselves just nine times. They also had five blocked shots.

The Dragons had four players finish in double figures for scoring. Jessica Fesenmaier topped the list with 12, Allison Swenson had 11, and Lindsey Anderson and Katie Walden had 10 each. Swenson was the team's top rebounder wtih eight boards. Meghan Rettke had three of the team's six blocked shots. Like the Wolves, the Dragons also shot 33.9 percent from the field (20-59).

Northern will be on the road next weekend, playing at Bemidji State on Friday and UM-Crookston on Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 6:00 pm.
