21-3 Run Separates Wolves From Beavers

ABERDEEN, S.D. - A 21-3 second half opening run put the Wolves back on top of the Beavers in the first round of the 2007 NSIC Red Baron Women's Basketball Classic Wednesday night in Aberdeen, SD. The Wolves (20-8) trailed at the half, but outscored Bemidji State (14-14) 42-25 in the final 20 minutes as they posted their 20th win of the season by a score of 72-56. Northern will continue postseason play in the Classic semis Saturday afternoon on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul. They will play the winner of the MSU Moorhead/Upper Iowa game.
The Wolves took awhile to get into their groove in the first game of postseason action. They turned the ball over 12 times before going into the halftime break down 30-31. Bemidji attacked the Wolves from three-point range, drilling home five treys in the first half.
Northern opened the second half with a 21-3 run, quickly jumping out to a 51-34 lead. They received the majority of their points in the paint and from the charity stripe. The Wolves' defense got to the Beavers as BSU struggled with turnovers and rebounds. Northern dominated the boards 26-14 in the second half, finishing the game with a 43-33 lead. 17 offensive boards in the game gave the Wolves 19 second chance points, while Bemidji came up with just eight.
Noelle Hall shot 10-of-14 from the field on her way to 28 points, the second consecutive game against BSU that Hall finished with 28. She rounded out the night with a double-double, pulling down 12 boards. Carolin Becker had 11 points and eight boards and Allison Johnson hit a trio of threes on her way to 11 points. The Wolves shot 39.4% from the field and got to the charity stripe 18 times, sinking 14 shots.
The Beavers were led by Amy Lawson with 11 points and four assists, while Melissa Roberts came off the bench to dump in 10 points. BSU's highest averaging scorer in Stephanie Peterson was held to just seven points but had a team high nine boards. The Beavers shot 37.9% from the field (22-58) including a three-point mark of 42.9% on the night (9-21). They turned the ball over 21 times, leading to 21 NSU points.
