Northern State head wrestling coach Pat Timm has announced the signing of two more student-athletes to the 2005-06 team.  Jonathan Mikkelsen and Phillip Downs are the newest members of Wolves Wrestling.

Jonathan MikkelsenJonathan Mikkelsen wrestled at 152 pounds at Virgin Valley High School.  The Bunkerville, Nev. native, was a 2004 State Champion and 2005 State Runner-up.  He placed at state four times during his high school career and was a 2005 Wrestling Academic State Champion.  A wrestling captain, he also played football in high school.  He plans to wrestle at the 157-weight class during his career at NSU. Jonathan, the son of Ned and Janet Mikkelsen, is undecided on a major at Northern State.

“Johnny has a lot of potential.  He is a proven winner and I am looking forward to seeing him contribute to the wrestling program.  He is coming into a weight class area where we will be graduating two seniors.  We look for him to improve this next year and be able to step into a varsity in the near future,” said Timm.

Phillip Downs Phillip Downs wrestled at 145 pounds at Madison High School in Madison, S.D.  There he was the 9 th all-time winningest wrestler at Madison High School with a 108-53 career mark.  He also holds the single season near fall record.  In 2005 he went 40-3 and finished third at state.  A year prior he was fifth at state.  Downs plans to wrestle at either 149 of 157 at NSU.  He is the son of Mike and Cathy Downs and plans to major in Accounting at Northern State.

“Philip is a hard nosed wrestler and a very hard worker.  He helps fill some holes that we had last year in the 149-pound weight class.  I am looking forward to seeing him improve and reach his potential and help the team during his eligibility with us,” commented Timm.

Northern State head wrestling coach Pat Timm has announced the signing of Jake Cawthorne and James Manuel as his fourth and fifth recruits to the 2005-06 squad.  They will join Mark Burkart (Cody, Wyo.), Logan Hayman (Grand Island, Neb.) and Austin Johnsrud (Watford City, N.D.) as the newest members of Northern State wrestling.

Jake CawthorneCawthorne wrestled in the 135 weight class at Harrisburg High School in Harrisburg, S.D. There he was a team captain, a five-time state qualifier and a two-time state champion.  Cawthorne, who also played football in high school, plans to wrestle at either the 133 or 141-weight class at NSU as he peruses a degree in business.  He is the son of Kelly and Pam Cawthorne.

“Jake has a lot of talent and finds ways to win which makes him a dangerous wrestler.  We are very excited to have him as he will be fighting for a starting spot at either weight class,” said coach Timm.

 

James ManuelManuel wrestled in the 145-pound weight class at Oxnard High School.  The Camarillo, Calif. native, was a Pacific View All-League selection, an all-county selection, team captain and was named his team’s most outstanding wrestler.  At Northern State he plans to wrestle at the 149-pound weight class and will study management information systems.  He is the son of Jim and Debbie Manuel. 

“James has a lot of untapped potential and we hope that he can develop into a major role for our program in the next year or so.  I am looking forward to coaching the both young men,” commented Timm.

ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State head wrestling Coach Pat Timm is happy to announce the signing of three student-athletes to the 2005-06 wrestling team. Mark Burkart (Cody, Wyo.), Logan Hayman (Grand Island, Neb.) and Austin Johnsrud (Watford City, N.D.) are the newest members of Wolves wrestling.

Mark BurkartMark Burkart is a 5’7” 140 pounder from Cody High School in Cody, Wyo. where he placed fifth in the state wrestling tournament in 2004 and 2005. Burkart plans to wrestle at 141 at NSU. He also participated in football at CHS. Mark plans to pursue a degree in Pre-Medicine at Northern State. Mark is the son of Larry Burkart.
“Mark will be giving us the depth we need at the 141 pound weight class. He had a successful high school career and we hope to build off of that for his college career,” said Timm.

 

Logan HaymanLogan Hayman is a 5’5” 135 pounder from Grand Island Senior High School in Grand Island, Neb. A team captain his senior year, Hayman is second all-time in wins at Grand Island High School with 119. He was a four time state qualifier and a three time state medal winner. He finished fourth in state his junior year and second his senior. He intends to wrestle at 141 pounds for NSU where he will major in Physical Education and minor in Business. Logan is the son of Alan and Julie Hayman.
“I feel that Logan has a lot of untapped potential. He had a very solid high school career and is a very coachable wrestler. He will be a nice fit for us at 141 pounds,” said Timm.

Austin JohnsrudAustin Johnsrud is a 5’8” 130 pounder from Watford City High School in Watford City, N.D. Johnsrud is a four-time regional champion and a North Dakota State champion in 2003 and 2004. In 2002 he placed second at state and he was third in 2005. The six year letter winner was his team captain his senior year. Austin is planning on wrestling at the 125/133 pound weight class. He also played football and ran track in high school. He plans on majoring in Environmental Science. Austin is the son of Rodney and Brenda Johnsrud.
“Austin is a very hard worker and a very accomplished wrestler. He is a fierce competitor and knows how to get to the next level. He will be a great addition in the lighter weights and should see a lot of varsity action next year,” added Timm.

Coach Timm added: “I feel that all three of these recruits bring a much needed depth to our lighter weights. They all have a lot of talent and I look for them to make and immediate impact on our program.”

Northern State University (located in Aberdeen, SD) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
