Paula (Stolsmark) Krueger

Women's Basketball

1990-94

Paula (Stolsmark) KruegerNorthern State University women’s basketball fans remember Paula (Stolsmark) Krueger as a hard-nosed guard during NSU’s national championship runs.

Krueger earned National Tournament Hustle Award in 1992 after winning their first National Championship. She followed that up with national tournament MVP honors as a senior during Northern’s national championship campaign in 1993-94. The Pierpont, S.D., native was clutch in a tight championship game against host team Western Oregon State University. Her steal and four free throws down the stretch helped NSU earn its second national title in three years by a score of 48-45 and finish the storybook season with a 32-1 record. In addition to her big-game heroics, Krueger was also a team captain and all-district performer on NSU’s softball team. She earned NSU’s prestigious Hildred Wolfe Student Athlete of the Year award as a senior.

After her athletic career, Krueger stepped outside of the playing lines, but not very far.

In 1995 she was an assistant girl’s basketball/track coach at Warner High School while finishing her undergraduate degree.    She served as a graduate assistant at Northern in 1996 for women’s basketball and softball while finishing up her studies. She received her bachelor’s in education from Northern in 1995 and her master’s in teaching in 1996. After graduation, Krueger served as a secondary physical education teacher at Pahrump Valley High School in Nevada. While there, she was the assistant girls basketball coach and a sprinters coach during track season.

When opportunity at Northern knocked once more, Krueger again answered. She accepted a head assistant women’s basketball and head softball coaching position at Northern in 1997. She is also the school’s athletic department fundraising coordinator.

After six years at Northern she packed her bags and headed west to take the head women’s basketball job at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. Krueger will be starting her third year as the head women's basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines in the winter of 2005.

In her first season at the helm, Krueger led Mines to a 12-16 mark, including a 10-9 record in conference play and the No. 7 seed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. It was an eight game improvement from the previous season and the first time CSM qualified for the postseason tournament since the 2001-02 season.

In her second campaign, Krueger’s team continued to improve as the Orediggers went 19-9 overall and 13-6 in the RMAC. The 19 overall wins and the 13 RMAC wins are the most wins in the school history at CSM.

Krueger and her husband Brad reside in Golden, Colorado.
