NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY STRENGTH & CONDITIONING PROGRAM
The Northern State strength and conditioning program is designed to provide each student-athlete with the most productive, safe and sound means of sport-specific physical training. The program is geared toward helping all student-athletes reach their physical potential while meeting any additional specific needs. NSU workouts are tailored to enable student-
athletes to maintain (if not increase) their speed, strength and conditioning levels during peak in-seasons and to increase those components through extensive and grueling training sessions during the off-season.
NSU student-athletes have access to over 2,500 square feet of strength training facilities as well as an indoor track and multi-use facility within the Barnett Center and Wachs Arena.
Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Derik Budig oversees the development of each student-athlete. Coach "B" stresses an intensive, physical program which leads to success and confidence on and off the playing field.
All programs are evaluated daily and each individual's progress is charted, monitored and updated by Coach B. While the student-athlete's physical progress is gauged through a battery of testing procedures, Coach B also helps student-athletes reach training goals by making sure they know the importance of commitment, consistency and accountability.
Each strength and conditioning program is sport specific. Speed, strength, conditioning, flexibility, and nutrition education are components of each program for NSU student-athletes. The year-round program is divided into three periods: pre-season, in-season and off-season.
Speed training is performed in the off-season and summer training periods. Increasing speed work involves qualitative analysis of running technique, while incorporating resistive and assistive training.
Agility and conditioning workouts vary depending upon the time of year and are specific to the energy systems and movement patterns of each sport. The primary goal of each team is to be the best conditioned athletes.
Flexibility training occurs year-round and involves individual instruction as well as team orientated supervision. This program is a continual one that is stressed on a daily basis.
Nutritional education is a very important aspect of the total program. Student-athletes are informed of how much food and what kinds of foods to consume in order to perform consistently at a high level.
