The NSU Dance Team, praised for its visually exciting and high energy style, perform at all home men's basketball games. During the season, the team also entertains at various game halftimes, pep rallies, and other spirit events.
The Dance Team performs pre-game through to the game's end, both on the sidelines and on center court. The dancers provide spirit and raise the level of fan support on the home court and at many NSU events.
The Northern State University Dance Team is one of the most visible and enthusiastic promotional student groups on campus. The NSU Dance Team consists of eight to 12 student-athletes. Emphasis in dance style is based on precision, performance, professionalism, projection and perfection.
The team is selected in September in a tryout/audition format. The tryout format is typically a short dance taught over a two-hour period, with selection of team members made that same night by a panel of qualified judges. Dance or cheer experience is certainly helpful, but not necessary.
All game, performance and choreography choices are made by the team members, under the guidance of the coach. We are looking for students who love to dance and entertain, be part of a close-knit team and experience what being a dance team student-athlete is all about. For information about becoming a Dance Team member, please call Shannon Westra Imbery at (605)-225-6390.
The dance team's goal is to support intercollegiate athletics and Northern State University. That support is directed into three major areas, as follows: (1) to raise the level of fan support for intercollegiate athletics; to lead in positive vocal and visual support for the team; to project that support and solicit that support from the Northern fans; (2) to participate in this athletic activity by performing dance movements; to perfect this athletic activity for keeping the crowds attention/direction focused on the field/floor where the intercollegiate activity is taking place, and for the entertainment and competitive purposes; and (3) to serve as public relations ambassadors of intercollegiate athletics and NSU; to appear at University functions, activities and programs, at charitable and public causes to promote intercollegiate athletics and NSU.
The Northern State University Dance Team is staffed and managed by the Northern State University Athletic Department.
