Season Wrap-Up

October 30th, 2006
Northern State finished their season 11-8-0 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC. The Wolves finished second in the NSIC during the regular season behind Winona State and were tied with Bemidji State and Concordia-St. Paul. Coach Steve Kehm recorded his 100th win on August 30th with a 6-0 victory over Dakota Wesleyan. In his career, Kehm has 108 wins.

The Wolves came out strong on the season, winning eight out their first eleven games, but then began to struggle.  Northern came out victorious in just three of their next eight games, including a loss in the first game of the NSIC tournament to the University of Mary, which put an end to their season.

The University of Mary (7-9-3) revenged a loss from earlier in the season against the Northern State Wolves (11-8) by defeating the Wolves 1-0 in the first round of the NSIC conference tournament. With the loss, the Wolves finished the season on a three-game skid, losing to Augustana College 1-3, MSU Mankato 0-2 and the University of Mary 0-1.

The Wolves and the Marauders each had 11 shots, but the Marauders had the edge in shots on goal by a margin of 7 to 4. The Wolves were led by Larissa Strychun with four shots, two of which being on goal. The Wolves were unable to get anything going offensively as the Marauders’ defense stifled the Wolves.

The lone goal of the game came in the 69th minute when Alyssa Deutscher blasted one past Wolves’ goal keeper Theresa Alexander. The assist came from Becky Beall from a corner kick. Theresa Alexander ended her season with a 6-7 mark.

On the season the Wolves recorded six shutouts and outscored their opponents 34-19. One of the Wolves biggest wins of the season came against the University of North Dakota in Grand Fork, ND by a score of 1-0 on August 27th.

Melissa Gamble was the first ever Northern soccer player to be named to the All-Central Region Team. Along with the being named to the All-Central Region First Team Gamble and Kira Wannebo were named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Region Third team.

During the season, the Wolves  outshot their opponents 263 to 156. They  averaged almost a goal more per game than their opponents as they scored an average of 1.77 goals per game to their opponents .99. The Wolves  outshot their opponents 13.8 to 8.2 per game.

Northern had three players named NSIC Players of the Week. Melissa Gamble was named Offensive Player of the Week on August 27th, 2006. Laura Skog (Fr., D., Anoka, Minn.) was the Defensive Player of the Week on September 12, 2006, and Theresa Alexander (Sr., GK., Cooper City, Fla.) was named Defensive Player of the Week on September 26, 2006.
