Big Jake

Jake Hamik - File PhotoEmporia, Kan. - Jake Hamik (So., Aberdeen, S.D.) won his heat in the preliminaries of the 400m hurdles at the NCAA DII National Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 51.52. Hamik is now one of eight athletes to race in the finals on Saturday at 7:19 p.m. in Emporia, Kan.

The win in his heat gave Hamik the automatic bid into the finals along with the other two heat winners. The next five highest times were then chosen to move on to the finals with the heat winners. Hamik’s time of 51.52 was the fifth fastest of the preliminaries, with the fastest time coming from Alvin Miles (Fr., St. Augustine) at 50.63.

Hamik saved his best race of the season thus far for the preliminaries as he brushed nearly a second off his previous best of 52.44. Hamik, the Northern State school record holder in the 400m hurdles, just needs to finish in the finals and he will be named All-American as the top eight finisher receive the honor. Northern State’s last All-American was Micah Arnold, who earned the award back in 2003-04 in the 60m indoor hurdles with a sixth place finish. In Head Coach Jim Fuller’s 17 years at Northern State he has coached 36 All-Americans, with Hamik possibly being his 37 th.
