NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Meet
Northern State junior Jake Hamik (Aberdeen) made his third trip to an NCAA Track & Field Championship and his second consecutive appearance at the outdoor Nationals. Hamik took fourth place in the 400 meter hurdles after posting a personal best time of 50.92 seconds. This is the third time that Hamik has reached All-American status in his career.
Jake’s journey to the National Championships started early in the season as he met several provisional qualifying times in the 400 hurdles. Competing against top Division I athletes at the Drake Relays on April 28, Hamik took sixth place in the event with a time of 51.08. As well as being a personal best time for Hamik and setting a new school record, this time would gain him entry into the National meet as the third-ranked runner.
At the National meet in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hamik placed sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 51.84. He went on to set a new personal best time and, yet again, set a new school record in the event in the finals with a showing of 50.92. Morehouse junior Damian Prince won the title with a time of 49.21.
Hamik reached All-American status for the first time in his career last season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he took eighth place in the 400 hurdles. He was named All-American for the second time at this year’s indoor track & field season, where he placed seventh in the 60 hurdles with a final time of 8.18. Hamik has been named 2007 NSIC Track Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. In addition to winning the 400 hurdles at the NSIC Championships, Hamik also took the top spot in the 110 hurdles (14.58) and the 400 (48.50), and ran the anchor leg of the second place 4x400 relay team.
