NSU Women's Basketball Signs Three Athletes

ABERDEEN, SD – Northern State head women's basketball coach Curt Fredrickson has announced the signing of Kayla Schmidt, Samantha Gacke, and Jess Peterson to National Letters of Intent. The athletes will joint the Northern State women's basketball team for the 2007-08 season.

Schmidt is a 5'9" guard/forward from Beulah, North Dakota, which is also the hometown of present NSU forward and captain Carolin Becker. Last year as a junior, Schmidt was the leading scorer in Class A basketball in North Dakota, averaging 20 point and six rebounds per game. She also led Class A basketball with 45 made three-point shots and shot 84% from the free throw line. Her honors include Second Team All-State, McDonald's All-American finalist, and she has already scored over 1,000 points.

Gacke is a 6'1" forward from Luverne, Minnesota. As a junior, Gacke had a 44% field goal percentage while averaging 15 points and ten rebounds per game. Her honors include being named All-State, All-Conference, and was her team's best offensive player. Samantha is expected to major in elementary education.

Peterson is a 5'10" forward from Taylor Falls, Minnesota who, as a junior, averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game. She has been a three-time All-Conference player, a two-time team MVP, was named All-State her junior year, and played in the All-Star game at the Minnesota Elite Camp.

"We feel these are three quality athletes that are joining our program at NSU," said Fredrickson. "They all had outstanding summers playing AAU basketball. With the addition of these three players, along with our talented freshman class, we feel very good about the future."
