COVID-19 News
Through the S.D. Department of Health, Northern has secured BinaxNOW/Quidel over the counter COVID tests. These test kits are free to NSU faculty, staff and students. Students can pick up their kits at Student Affairs (Avera Student Center 222). Faculty and staff should check with their direct supervisors. Complimentary COVID testing for all South Dakotans are still available through Vault Health’s website as well. These are available for both symptomatic/asymptomatic and vaccinated/unvaccinated individuals. For additional COVID-19 information, visit northern.edu/coronavirus, covid.sd.gov or cdc.gov.
Academic Updates
A collaboration between the Aberdeen Development Corporation (ADC) and NSU has led to an initiative to promote the Aberdeen region digital economy ecosystem with the assistance of the Center on Rural Innovation (CORI). The core team will prepare a grant proposal for submission to a federal program to support Aberdeen’s digital entrepreneurs. The CORI core team includes:

- Dr. Erin Fouberg, NSU Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Erin Fouberg, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, has been selected for the 2022 Western Academic Leadership Academy organized by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Congratulations, Dr. Fouberg!
Becky Nelson, Assistant Director of International Recruitment and Admissions, has been selected for the 2022 Leadership Aberdeen program. Congratulations, Becky!
Drs. Audrey Miller, Associate Professor of Music, and Chelsee Shortt, Assistant Professor of Exercise Science and Physical Education, have been selected for the 2022 COPLAC Beard Leadership Circle program for department chair professional development. Congratulations, Dr. Miller and Dr. Shortt!
Dr. Hannah Walters, Assistant Professor of Marketing, is serving as an executive officer of the national Marketing Management Association. She is currently Vice President of Marketing. Later this spring she transitions into the President-Elect position and next spring she will serve as President of the organization.
Valentine’s Day Sale

Campus Enrollment Forums
Campus enrollment forums will be held at noon and 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, in Krikac Auditorium. President Schnoor and Justin Fraase will present initial actions of the Enrollment Management Council, the upcoming partnership with EAB, and current enrollment metrics and figures. Please bring your questions, feedback and ideas.
Intro to Scratch Programming and Coding
Beulah Williams Library will hold an event, Intro to Scratch Programming and Coding, at 1 p.m. Feb. 15 in the library. All NSU students, faculty and staff are invited to attend to learn the Scratch programming and coding. Email Lynn.Klundt@northern.edu with any questions!
Spring 2022 Noon Forums
Northern’s spring 2022 Noon Forum series will kick of next week with featured speaker Dr. Jon Schaff. Schaff’s presentation, titled “Why Presidential Election Reform Backfires,” will begin at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in the Williams Library Rotunda. Noon Forums, which are free and open to the public, will continue throughout the semester at noon most Wednesdays in the library. Upcoming topics and presenters are as follows:

Northern Theatre presents ‘Frankenstein in Love’ Feb. 17-20
From horror master Clive Barker, this play follows a rebellious monster as he pursues his wicked creator and maybe finds a love equally monstrous. The show runs in the Black Box Theater in the Johnson Fine Arts Center on Feb. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. This is a mature-audiences show. Student tickets are free at the box office in JFAC before the show each night.
TRIO Day
On Wednesday, Feb. 23, the TRIO Scholars Association (TSA) is hosting its annual celebration of TRIO Day. This day-long event begins in the Student Center Mall, 11 a.m-1 p.m., with tabling. Tabling will offer free care packages for students, an opportunity to obtain punch cards that offer the chance to win prizes, and more. The day continues with a game night in the Student Center Centennial Rooms from 6 to 8 p.m., where students can play a variety of board games and Kahoot games. A free walking taco bar, drinks and the opportunity to win multiple prize baskets worth over $50 will also be available. All students are encouraged to attend and celebrate the festivities of the day!
Feb 23: Equity and Online Teaching with Kevin Kelly
Join CETL for an interactive conversation on equity and online teaching with Kevin Kelly, Ed.D., of San Francisco State. Dr. Kelly teaches online courses as a Lecturer in the Department of Equity, Leadership Studies and Instructional Technologies at San Francisco State University. Stop by Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in MJ 201, for a fruitful discussion and FREE snacks! If unable to attend in person, please join via this zoom link.
Student Success Center Open House
The Student Success Center is now located on the first floors of the Technology Center and the Mewaldt-Jensen Building. Make plans to check out the new space and learn about all services available at an open house scheduled for Friday, Feb. 25, from noon to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the Student Success Center Learning Commons, TC 148. AUCS Concert
The Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony treats you to a “Night at the Oscars®,” featuring some of the most beloved themes from movies conducted by director, Dr. Christopher Stanichar. The concert takes place on Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. There will be a Pre-Concert Conversation scheduled for 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall. Audiences will be treated to some of the most famous and memorable music from recent and classic movies. Orchestra members will be dressed as their favorite cinema character, and audience members are encouraged to do the same. All tickets are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. Faculty Recital
Drs. Marla Fogderud and Anne Waltner will present a recital, “Songs Older and Newer: A Showcase of Edvard Grieg’s Romanser,” at Northern State University. The recital featuring Fogderud, soprano, and Waltner, piano, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in the NSU Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. The program, produced in cooperation with the Edvard Grieg Society of the Dakotas, features works from throughout the career of Norway’s most influential composer. Fogderud is an Associate Professor of Music at NSU and Waltner is a freelance pianist from Parker, S.D. Their recital is free and open to the public. Cracker Barrel
Legislative Cracker Barrel sessions for 2022 will be held in the Kessler’s Champions Club in the NSU Barnett Center. Cracker barrels, which are open to the public, will take place 10 a.m.-noon on the following Saturday morning: March 5, 2022. To stay informed during the session and track bills in the S.D. March 9: Snackchat – Building Resiliency with Michael Skyles
Join CETL host, Michael Skyles, on Wednesday, March 9, at 4 p.m. in MJ 201 for a conversation on how faculty and staff can help students build resiliency. Light snacks will be provided. If you are unable to join in person, please join via Zoom.
Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant
Northern State University is now accepting applications for the 2022 Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant. Students can receive up to $2,500 toward their independent research project for the academic year. To increase research engagement across campus, our new format now creates an option for multiple awardees. Students from all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants must design a formal research project under the mentorship of a faculty member. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday, March 11. Northern Edge Award
Do you need funding for a research project, exhibit or academic performance? The Northern Edge Award is available to fund both undergraduate and graduate research projects at NSU. It is especially intended to aid student projects in under-represented disciplines and/or projects that may not be eligible/competitive for other funding opportunities on campus (i.e., student travel grants, or the Competitive Research Grant). Faculty-mentored projects may receive up to $1,000 that can be used for traditional research expenses or discipline-specific costs such as travel for performances/exhibits. GiveNDay is Coming! April 6-7, 2022
The Northern State Foundation is excited to host our second annual day of giving, GiveNDay, on April 6, 2022! This 24-hour challenge is designed to inspire all supporters of Northern to come together as we work to provide funding across the university. Last year was a huge success as our community raised $193,000 from over 1,200 donors. Also known as #OneDayOnePack, this year’s goal is to receive support from 1,800 donors in 24 hours.

Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum
The annual NSU Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, in the Beulah Williams Library. All students participating in scholarly activity are invited to participate. Submissions of abstracts are due April 1. American Indian Circle Program
NSU is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to participate in our monthly Smudge the first Tuesday of every month from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. This is a time where we come together and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. For the spring 2022 semester, we will smudge in the courtyard outside MJ 112, which is the new Circle Program student space under the Student Success Center. Everyone is welcome!

HOW TO EARN POINTS
All regular season home competitions are worth 10 points. Some games are worth 20 points and are promoted as “Double Howling Wolves Points” games. If you attend two or more separate athletic events in the same day (i.e. football and volleyball) then you will receive an additional 5 points for that day. Double-header events (i.e. basketball, baseball, and softball) are worth 10 points throughout the entirety of the doubleheader.
All points reset each month allowing for a new opportunity each month to win the monthly prize.
All home athletic events are FREE for NSU students who have a valid student ticket so there is no required cost to be a part of the Howling Wolves.
All Howling Wolves members are highly encouraged to sit in the designated Student Section at all home athletic events. Become an active member of the Howling Wolves Student Fan Club and help us defend our territory! GO WOLVES!!
