The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program is an Internal Revenue Service program offered annually during the tax filing season. NSU's School of Business is pleased to participate in this program which offers individuals with low to moderate income an opportunity to obtain free, qualified assistance in the preparation and filing of federal income tax returns appropriate for their situation. This program offers Accounting students at an acceptable educational level hands-on experience in one area of their chosen field. Under the expert guidance of Accounting faculty and IRS representatives student volunteers are trained and certified to be qualified prior to actual participation. This guidance continues as faculty and/or IRS personnel attend each VITA session to address difficult questions volunteers and taxpayers may have. Student volunteers may gain experience in the preparation of tax returns requiring any of the following:
Student volunteers are not required to complete complicated returns and those requiring other forms not listed above. Taxpayers with complicated returns are asked to contact a paid tax preparer.
