DR. DAVID ROGERS, PROFESSOR
Dr. David H. Rogers, an Assistant Professor at Northern State University, teaches courses in Banking and Financial Services and Economics at University Center in Sioux Falls. Several of these courses are carried by the Dakota Distance Network to other locations within the State. Dr. Rogers earned his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City.
After beginning his career as an economist in the Federal Reserve System, Dr. Rogers moved on to increasingly responsible senior management positions with publicly traded and privately held companies in the finance, banking and real estate industries. He has also served on the board of directors of two financial institutions and several not-for-profit entities in the fields of education and the arts.
“This is the most enjoyable job I’ve ever had,” says Dr. Rogers. “Teaching, interacting with students, developing new banking courses, being immersed in academic research on issues that fascinate me—it just doesn’t get any better than this.” Although he teaches face-to-face at University Center in Sioux Falls, several of Dr. Rogers’ courses are beamed in real time via the Dakota Distance Network to other locations, including Pierre and Aberdeen. He also makes it a practice every semester to originate at least one session of each DDN course from the locations that are normally on the receiving end. “When the professor and the students have met and talked with each other, they become more than just electronic images. This facilitates the learning process.” In his non-academic moments, Dr. Rogers enjoys gardening, classical music and the splendid company of his wife, Bonnie, and several cats.
“Banks and other financial institutions offer exceptional career opportunities,” states Dr. Rogers. “The baby boomer generation will soon begin to retire. This will create literally thousands of jobs at banks and bank regulatory agencies throughout the country. In states such as South Dakota, this phenomenon will be particularly acute at smaller institutions in rural areas.” Dr. Rogers believes that the challenging and stimulating courses offered within Northern’s Banking and Financial Services program will equip students with the background and skills to enter the financial services industry, to develop successful careers and to make substantial contributions to the communities they serve.
