Pre-medicine at Northern State University

While you won't see pre-med as an official program at NSU, many students declare this as their major with the intention of attending medical school.  While it is not required that you receive a degree in science to be accepted to medical school, it certainly would help you be more prepared for the rigors the program you enter.  Two of our recent graduates are in medical school at the University of South Dakota.  Read what they have to say about NSU and how it helped prepare them for their programs on our alumni page.  Other alumni have gone on to become Physician Assistants, surgeons, and other types of medical professionals.

Information from the Association of American Medical Colleges

“The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) routinely counsels pre-med students to pursue a variety of majors as an undergraduate.  Indeed, in 2006, 44% of all Biology majors who applied to medical school were accepted while 53% of all Humanities majors were accepted.  The essential skills of every medical practitioner--acquiring, synthesizing, and applying knowledge and effectively communicating that information to everyone—can be developed in a wide range of majors including history, psychology, and even music.  Study the subject you have a passion for in college; it will help distinguish you from the other 483,148 students applying for the 17,370 first-years seats in medical school.”
