Identification Clues: This species is a cultivated, ornamental that has been selected for its showy pink flowers and hanging branches.  The leaves are simple, serrate, and occur alternately on the branches.  The flowers bloom in early spring, and the fruit is a small apple that ripens in the fall. 

Distribution:  This genus of the tree is highly cultivated and widely planted across the country as ornamental yard trees.  There are two species native to the Eastern United States, and many ornamental varieties that have been developed in nurseries.  In South Dakota, many varieties of flowering crabs are planted in yards and shelterbelts. 
 

Highlights:  The fruits are eaten by wildlife and people.
