Schubert Chokecherry

Identification Clues:
This tree has a purplish foliage for most of the summer, but the leaves emerge as bright green in the spring.  As these leaves harden, they turn the deep reddish purple.  The tree has a dense, pyramidal to oval shape, and grayish bark.  The flowers are white in terminal racemes.

Distribution:
This red-leafed variety was first introduced in 1950 in Bismark, ND.  The species, Prunus virginiana, is native to the plains states.

Highlights:
It is very useful as an accent plant in parks and yards.  Wildlife eat the fruit, that is also prized by people for making jelly.
