Tree #38, Norway Maple
Acer platanoides
Aceraceae
Identification Clues:
The Norway maple is very similar in appearance to the sugar maple but can be separated from it by the more numerous "teeth" on the leaf margin.  Also, this species exudes a milky liquid from broken leaf stalks, whereas sugar maple sap is watery.

Distribution:
This species is an ornamental introduced to America from Europe.  Its most common use is for landscaping.

Highlights:
Norway maples have been planted in South Dakota shelterbelts, in parks, and used for landscape because of their hardiness and lovely red fall leaves.
