Identification Clues: 
This small, showy ornamental tree is most easily recognized in the early spring when it displays many beautiful pink or white flowers.  The small apple fruits occur in the late summer and fall.  the leaves are simple, alternate on the stem, and are finely toothed. 

Distribution: 
This genus of tree is highly cultivated and widely planted across the country as ornamental yard trees.  There are two species native to the Eastern United States, and many ornamental varieties that have been developed in nurseries.  In South Dakota, many varieties of flowering crabs are planted in yards and sheterbelts. 

Highlights: 
The fruits are eaten by wildlife and people.
