Tree # 40, Ginkgo
Ginkgo biloba
Ginkgoaceae
Identification Clues:
The Ginkgo tree is large and has a clear yellow fall color.  Its leaf is a unique fan shape that will make this tree easy to spot.  The nut, borne only on female trees, has a messy, sticky outer layer that emits an offensive odor.  It may take twenty or more years before a seedling ginkgo flowers.  The tree on the NSU campus is a male, and will therefore not produce friut.

Distribution:
The ginkgo prefers sandy, deep, moderately moist soil, but it will grow in almost any situation.

Highlights:
The ginkgo seems to be resistant to city smog and pollution and is pest free.  It is also the only survivor in its family, which existed when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
