The Terence Brown Tree Trail is an educational resource
located on the campus of Northern State
University in Aberdeen South Dakota. It provides students and
the community with an opportunity to educate themselves about the tree
species growing in and around Aberdeen.
The NSU Environmental Society and the NSU CUEST Science Education Center
dedicate this educational resource to the memory of Dr. Terence Brown,
NSU President from 1982 - 1992. Dr. Brown's commitment to the beauty
of the university campus and to the high quality of NSU educational programs
make this memorial especially appropriate. This original project
was directed by Dr. Erika Tallman, but much of the research was accomplished
through the hard work of the NSU Environmental Society students.
Three students who are primarily responsible for the trail and brochure
development are Gary Klatt, Martha Mehlhaff, and Deb Pfeifle. A special
thanks is owed to Dave Mazzie, the district forester who verified the information
included in the brochure. Creating this virtual version of the T.B.
Tree Trail was initiated by Keith Wrage and the Plant Systematics class
in the Fall of 1999. Many of the younger trees that have been planted
on campus were generously donated in April 1990 by students,
faculty and community members, to commemorate the 20th anniversary
of Earth Day. We are very grateful for the community wide support
for this project. We hope that you enjoy this beautiful natural resource. |
